Adam Hamawy
D · U.S. House, NJ-12 · Tier 5/6
Tier 5/6, between “Critical on most positions” and “Most critical of Israel / supports Palestine”
Army veteran and trauma surgeon who operated in Gaza in 2024–25; won the June 2026 primary to succeed retiring Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman in a deep-blue seat — effectively member-elect. Calls for a complete arms embargo on Israel, an end to all US military aid, and the Palestinian right of return; opposes Iron Dome as “insulating Israel” from “having to deal with the consequences of war” (as JTA quoted from Hasan Piker’s show); says there is 'no such thing as progressive except for Palestine.' At the Sep 24, 2026 JVP protest outside the UN, Hamawy said “I’m here to stand up against genocide. I’m here to protest Netanyahu being allowed into this country, not being arrested, and allowed to speak in the United Nations, which is supposed to be the international body upholding international law.”
A 5/6. His platform pledges “support for the Palestinian Right of Return under international law,” a position that goes to Israel’s legitimacy as a Jewish state, and his stance on weapons is firm and in his own words: he opposes “arms sales to countries committing gross human rights violations” and supports “cutting off military aid to these countries, including Israel.” He opposes Iron Dome as “insulating Israel,” and he names the genocide and the apartheid he says he witnessed on medical missions. Beside the right of return he has backed one state — “One state, equal rights for everyone” (New Jersey Globe, May 2026) — though he has not endorsed BDS by name or called himself anti-Zionist, and his record before the campaign is a surgeon’s witness rather than organizing: his Gaza medical missions and two open letters from American health workers who served there, which he co-signed (July 2024 and October 2025), urging an end to U.S. military support for Israel’s assault and an international arms embargo. Chelsey Hockett and Patty Garcia, who back the right of return beside an end to all U.S. military aid, are 5/6 too; Chris Rabb also has the right of return on his platform, but his embargo is reported rather than in his own words. Counter-case: a 6, if his 2024–25 surgical missions in Gaza and his witness since are read as sustained activism.
