Tier 3, “Pro-Israel, critical”

Position

She is the author of “Dopesick” and a former Roanoke Times reporter. Asked by Cardinal News about an arms embargo, she answered that “American taxpayer dollars should not fund weapons that Benjamin Netanyahu is using against innocent civilians” and that “Any US military assistance to Israel must be questioned and thoroughly examined by policy makers before going forward,” while saying “Israel has a right to defend itself in the wake of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack” and that “Netanyahu's outsized response” has “cost the lives of over 73,000 civilians.” In Virginia public media’s questionnaire (WMRA, published by WVTF) she added that “Netanyahu's response has gone far beyond defense and is more about revenge,” costing “the lives of about 73,000 Palestinians, including tens of thousands of children.”

Why this tier

A flat 3. She draws a line at funding weapons used against civilians and wants all military aid to Israel scrutinized — a single step toward limiting weapons — and puts the civilian toll in her own words. What holds her at 3 rather than 3/4 is the frame around it: she affirms Israel’s right to defend itself, aims the criticism at Netanyahu rather than the arms relationship, does not say “genocide,” and commits only to questioning aid rather than withholding it — the same shape as Rebecca Cooke’s 3. Counter-cases: 3/4 if the first sentence is read as a clear pledge to withhold offensive arms; 2/3 if “questioned and thoroughly examined” is read as no commitment at all.
