Tier 2, “Mainstream pro-Israel”

Position

A Democrat endorsed by JDCA and by J Street, which organizes “pro-Israel, pro-peace Americans,” making a third run at this swing seat. Asked in August 2026 about the Democratic Party’s changing position on Israel, she said, “A lot of this violence has gone too far,” then, “We have to make sure that Israel can defend itself and make sure we do not have a nuclear Iran” (WHBF, 4 the Record). Jewish Insider, profiling her in October 2026, quoted her from an August interview with a local station: “Israel has a right to exist … However, there is no question that the war in Gaza has gone on for far too long. It has killed tens of thousands of innocent people, and it needs to end, just as the Iran war needs to end.” In 2024, pressed by constituents to call for a ceasefire and an arms embargo, she declined, saying she has to represent everyone in the district, and drew Palestine-solidarity protests over her silence. At an October 2024 Iowa PBS debate she said “the suffering in Gaza is also heartbreaking,” citing “40,000 people dead, mostly women and children,” and that Israel has “a responsibility under international law” to avoid harm to civilians and allow in humanitarian aid. She called demands for Israel’s elimination “wholly unacceptable” and has been attacked from the right for not showing enough support for Israel.

Why this tier

A 2, on a thin record of short statements. At an October 2024 Iowa PBS debate she said “the suffering in Gaza is also heartbreaking. I mean, 40,000 people dead, mostly women and children,” and that Israel has “a responsibility under international law” to avoid harm to civilians and “allow in humanitarian aid and aid workers.” That is concern for Gaza’s civilians, aimed at Israel’s conduct, in her own words. The arms she backed in that debate were “defensive weaponry” against Iran’s missiles. In August 2026 she told WHBF, “A lot of this violence has gone too far,” and, in an August interview Jewish Insider quoted in October, that the war in Gaza “has killed tens of thousands of innocent people, and it needs to end.” There is no leadership on the issue, and DMFI’s PAC gave her $1,000 in 2024. Counter-case: 1/2, since in that debate answer she first said Israel “has a right to defend itself” and blamed Hamas for using civilians “as human shields”; in 2024, pressed at a campaign event, she declined to call for a ceasefire or an arms embargo; and her August 2026 words go straight on to “We have to make sure that Israel can defend itself.”
