Tier 3, “Pro-Israel, critical”
In his 2026 iVoterGuide questionnaire he called Israel “a longstanding democratic ally” with an “important commitment to its security,” said the partnership “must also reflect our commitment to human rights and international law,” and backed a two-state solution protecting “Israel’s security and Palestinian rights and dignity, with firm protections for civilians and security assistance conditioned on adherence to humanitarian standards.” The mayor of High Point and a former teacher, he won the March 2026 Democratic primary to challenge Rep. Addison McDowell, running on costs, health care, public safety and job training.
A 3, on a thin record: one questionnaire answer. Asked by iVoterGuide in 2026 whether the U.S. relationship with Israel is important, he answered “Yes,” calling Israel “a longstanding democratic ally” to which the U.S. has “an important commitment to its security,” and adding that the partnership “must also reflect our commitment to human rights and international law.” He backs two states with “firm protections for civilians and security assistance conditioned on adherence to humanitarian standards.” That conditioning clause is a step toward restricting arms, but it sits inside a supportive frame, singles out no offensive weapons, mentions neither Block the Bombs nor the genocide, and his campaign site says nothing about Israel. Counter-cases: 3/4, if the clause is read as a pledge to withhold arms; 2/3, if it is read as routine conditions language.
