Tier 3, “Pro-Israel, critical”
Says Israel “certainly” has a right to defend itself and backs “a two-state solution” (May 2026 forum), but that “all aid from the United States should come with conditions,” including adherence to U.S. law and human-rights standards, and that “you can be anti-Netanyahu and believe in the state of Israel” (October 2026); the Marblehead Current reported his “serious concerns about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and its use of U.S. military assistance.” He has said that “to basically just ignore the suffering in Gaza is a disgrace” and declined to call it a genocide: “I’ll let other people define it.” A Lebanese and Korean American former White House deputy cabinet secretary, he won the September 1 Democratic primary for the open MA-6 seat. In written answers to the Jewish Journal (October 15, 2026) he called October 7 “a horrific attack,” said “The conflict that has continued in Gaza is devastating” and “We need to do everything we can to make sure humanitarian aid reaches the people of Gaza without obstruction,” and added, “Lasting peace and stability will ultimately require diplomacy and a two-state solution.”
A 3. In an October 2026 interview with the Marblehead Current that turned to U.S. military assistance to Israel, he said: “I think that all aid from the United States should come with conditions.” The Current reports that he said those conditions should include adherence to U.S. law and human-rights standards, and that he voiced “serious concerns about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and its use of U.S. military assistance.” That is conditioning aid on conduct, which goes past Netanyahu criticism alone. Beside it he voices concern for Gaza in his own words: “to basically just ignore the suffering in Gaza is a disgrace.” He keeps the mainstream frame: Israel “certainly” has a right to defend itself, he backs “a two-state solution,” and “you can be anti-Netanyahu and believe in the state of Israel.” He declines the word genocide (“I’ll let other people define it”) and names no halt on any weapon. Counter-case: 2/3, since the conditions are a general principle for all U.S. aid, stated in one interview, with their content given only in the Current’s paraphrase.
