Darin LaHood
R · U.S. House, IL-16 · Tier 1/2
Tier 1/2, between “Firmly pro-Israel” and “Mainstream pro-Israel”
Lebanese American co-chair of the U.S.–Lebanon Friendship Caucus with a zero-daylight Israel voting record: the 2023–24 aid bills, H.Res.894, the May 2024 bill forcing delivery of the arms Biden paused, both ICC-sanctions bills and the September 2026 anti-boycott bill, and No on the 2025 Greene and 2026 Massie cuts. Backing the November 2023 supplemental, he said it was critical to keep supporting Israel “as they seek to eradicate Hamas, that all hostages held by Hamas in Gaza be released, that support for humanitarian aid continues”; at Netanyahu’s July 2024 address he said Israel “has the right to continue its defense” and attacked Illinois colleagues who boycotted it. He welcomed Nasrallah’s killing — “The world is a much better place without” him (Sep 2024) — expressing concern for the people of Lebanon while placing “the death and destruction in Lebanon” on Hezbollah and Iran. In a Shaw Local candidate questionnaire published Sep 25, 2026 he wrote, “I stand with our ally against Hamas and Hezbollah, terrorist organizations that have repeatedly put their own people in harm’s way and answer only to the extremist leaders of Iran,” and he co-led, with Josh Gottheimer, a House Intelligence Committee delegation that returned from Lebanon on Oct 1 after pressing Lebanese leaders to disarm Hezbollah under the framework Lebanon signed with the United States and Israel in June 2026. In January 2024 he signed the Smith–Manning letter, whose signers “thoroughly reject” South Africa’s “charge of genocide” against Israel.
A 1/2, not a clean 1. LaHood has voted for every tracked Israel measure and has no leadership on Israel: his caucus and legislative work is on Lebanon’s politics, not Israel, and he wrote no Israel legislation. His references to Gaza aid came in the same breath as support for Israel’s drive to eradicate Hamas (“support for humanitarian aid continues,” Nov 2023) or stopped short of backing it (asked about aid for Gaza’s civilians: “We’ll have to see how that comes forth and how that’s paid for,” Nov 2023); of Gaza’s civilian deaths he said, “Is that sad? Yes, it is. But I blame that on Hamas” (Dec 2023); and his concern for Lebanese civilians blames Hezbollah for their deaths, so none of it is concern of his own for Palestinians. Counter-case: open to a flat 2 only if a Gaza-civilian statement made apart from Israel’s self-defense surfaces.
