Tier 3, “Pro-Israel, critical”

Position

Asked at a May 2026 Democratic primary forum hosted by Heart of Iowa Dems whether he would vote for “an immediate end in aid to Israel to stop the Gaza genocide”, he said: “I do not support giving military aid to any nation that engages in genocide and with regards to the Palestinian and Israeli situation, the International Criminal Court has indicated that war crimes have been committed by the Israelis. So I am very concerned that we continue to unilaterally support them. We should be able to withhold aid in a way that might, you know, twist arms to bring them back to negotiating a two-state solution.” A Woodbury County prosecutor who served in the Iowa House in 2013–2016, he voted against Iowa’s 2016 anti-BDS law (HF 2331, barring state contracts with and investments in companies that boycott Israel; passed the House 70-25); his campaign runs on rural health care, broadband and wages, and he opposes the 2026 Iran war as unauthorized by Congress.

Why this tier

A 3, on a thin record: one answer at a May 2026 primary forum. Asked about “an immediate end in aid to Israel to stop the Gaza genocide,” he said “I do not support giving military aid to any nation that engages in genocide,” that “the International Criminal Court has indicated that war crimes have been committed by the Israelis,” and that “We should be able to withhold aid in a way that might, you know, twist arms” toward a two-state solution. Withholding aid as leverage, argued on Israel’s conduct, is conditioning, the shape of the Block the Bombs Act, not the end to aid he was asked about, and he used “genocide” only as a general rule. His site and Ballotpedia survey are silent on Israel, and he has not raised it in general-election debates. In the Iowa House he voted against the 2016 anti-BDS law, one of 25 Nays, with no recorded explanation. Counter-cases: 3/4, for the ICC grounding and the anti-BDS Nay; 2/3, since the call is hedged, tied to a two-state goal and said once.
