David Weprin
D · New York State Assembly, District 24 · Tier 1
Tier 1, “Firmly pro-Israel”
A2139-A (IHRA codification) cosponsor with an active post-October-2023 record. In April 2024 he and Charles Lavine wrote to the SUNY Chancellor demanding that the Binghamton student association withdraw a divestment resolution or that the chancellor rescind its charter, invoking Executive Order 157 to argue the students’ action was illegal: “I’d like to have the chancellor tell the student association that there are consequences for calling for what would be an illegal action under New York state law.” Co-president of the New York chapter of the National Association of Jewish Legislators; a 2016 anti-BDS statement in his own words on assembly.ny.gov.
A 1. Weprin has repeatedly demanded action against students and Palestine-solidarity groups in New York. In April 2024 he and Charles Lavine wrote to the SUNY chancellor demanding that Binghamton’s student association withdraw its divestment resolution or lose its charter, citing the state’s anti-BDS executive order; their letter called some uses of the word genocide about Gaza “an antisemitic trope,” and he said he wanted the chancellor to tell the students “there are consequences.” It was not his first such demand: in March 2016 he signed Assemblyman Dov Hikind’s letter urging CUNY to suspend Students for Justice in Palestine, saying “I call on CUNY to keep their campuses hate-free by taking concrete action on SJP.” He cosponsors A2139-A, which would have state agencies weigh the IHRA definition of antisemitism in discrimination cases, and in 2016 he applauded the governor’s anti-BDS order, saying BDS “seeks to de-legitimize Israel.” No concern for Palestinian civilians appears in his record. Counter-case: 1/2, since he has written no Israel measure of his own, the IHRA bill is another member’s and the 2016 letter was Hikind’s.
