Tier 1, “Firmly pro-Israel”
On October 7, 2023 he said Israel “has every right to defend itself and respond with overwhelming force” and that “Calls for Israel to back down and not retaliate are fueled by a hateful indifference as to the existence of the Jewish State”; backing the November 2023 Israel-only supplemental he called Hamas “vicious animals who aim to carry out a genocide against Jews.” He led a letter demanding that DHS fire an asylum officer over pro-Hamas posts (Oct 2023), co-signed Andrew Clyde's letter demanding answers from four news organizations about Gaza photojournalists present at the October 7 attack (Dec 2023), introduced a bill to cut off federal funds to universities with endowments over $5 billion after the campus antisemitism hearing, and was an original cosponsor of Matt Gaetz's GAZA Act barring Palestinian Authority passport holders (Jun 2024). He voted for the November 2023 supplemental, the Tlaib censure, H.Res.894, the bill forcing delivery of the paused bomb shipment, both ICC sanctions bills, the ban on citing Gaza Health Ministry casualty figures and the September 2026 college anti-boycott bill, and against the Greene and Massie cuts, but against the February 2024 Israel-only supplemental, the April 2024 package and the Antisemitism Awareness Act, with no public explanation found for the February vote; of the April package he said “Congress is neglecting critical issues at home” (Apr 2024), and after the Antisemitism Awareness Act vote, sharing a post that asked whether the House had just made parts of the Bible illegal, he wrote that “4 of us went to the Speaker’s Office hours before the vote asking him to fix this” (May 2024). In January 2024 he signed the Smith–Manning letter, whose signers “thoroughly reject” South Africa’s “charge of genocide” against Israel.
A 1 on a crackdown he led. After the December 2023 House hearing on campus antisemitism he introduced the No Taxpayer Funding for Ivy League Schools Act, which would cut off federal funds to universities with endowments over $5 billion: “Bankrolling institutions that sympathize with terrorists is unthinkable – especially with $33 trillion in national debt.” In October 2023 he led a letter demanding that DHS fire an asylum officer, a former PLO spokeswoman, over her posts, and in 2024 he was an original cosponsor of the GAZA Act barring Palestinian Authority passport holders. His words match: Israel “has every right to defend itself and respond with overwhelming force,” and he called Hamas “vicious animals who aim to carry out a genocide against Jews.” He voted for the November 2023 supplemental, the bill forcing delivery of the paused bomb shipment, both ICC-sanctions bills and the 2026 college anti-boycott bill, and against the Greene and Massie cuts. Counter-case: a 1/2, since the endowment bill was a one-off also pitched as debt reduction, and he voted against the February and April 2024 aid bills without giving an Israel-specific reason, and against the Antisemitism Awareness Act after joining claims that it outlawed parts of the Bible.
