Tier 1/2, between “Firmly pro-Israel” and “Mainstream pro-Israel”
Speaking to Jewish Insider in August 2026 about the U.S.-Israel relationship, he said “we have to foster that alliance” and “We can’t demonize our friends, we’ve got to support them” (Jewish Insider’s interview is the only source; VINnews re-reported it). As a Minnesota state senator he voted in April 2017 for HF 400, the law barring state contracts with vendors that boycott Israel, which passed the Senate 57–8; he authored none of the chamber's Israel measures. A former U.S. Bank risk executive in the Senate since 2013, he runs in MN-2 on the economy, public safety and fraud.
A 1/2, on a thin record: one interview and one state vote. In August 2026 he told Jewish Insider, whose interview is the only source (VINnews re-reported it), that “Having a Democratic society, an ally in the Middle East, helps the United States be safe. And we have to foster that alliance,” and “Allies can be critical of each other and they can question each other, but at the end of the day, we’ve got to be friends marching in the same direction. … We can’t demonize our friends, we’ve got to support them.” As the outlet reported it, he also said allies including Israel need the resources to defend themselves (while welcoming efforts by allies, Israel included, to become more self-sufficient), that Congress should oppose BDS efforts targeting Israel, and that he is open to a two-state solution only if Israel has a role in negotiating it and its sovereignty stays intact, and that terrorist organizations cannot control the Palestinian government. In April 2017 he voted for Minnesota’s law barring state contracts with vendors that boycott Israel (HF 400, passed 57–8). He has led no Israel legislation and has expressed no concern for Palestinian civilians. Counter-case: unrated, since the policy lines are the outlet’s paraphrase.
