Erin Houchin
R · U.S. House, IN-9 · Tier 1/2
Tier 1/2, between “Firmly pro-Israel” and “Mainstream pro-Israel”
Indiana Republican on the House Rules Committee whose campaign site says she “stands firmly with Israel, our nation’s strongest ally in the Middle East” and that “we as a nation have a moral obligation to unequivocally defend Israel”; her House site’s one Israel statement, on a May 2023 congressional trip there, looks ahead to “continuing our strong U.S.-Israel friendship for years to come”. She was an original cosponsor of the November 2023 aid supplemental (H.R.6126), H.R.8369 and the 2025 ICC sanctions bill, and a later cosponsor of the Antisemitism Awareness Act and the 2024 ICC sanctions bill. She voted for the 2023–24 aid supplementals, H.Res.894, the Antisemitism Awareness Act, H.R.8369 against the 2024 arms pause, ICC sanctions (2024 and 2025), the June 2024 amendment barring State Department use of Gaza Health Ministry casualty figures and the September 2026 anti-boycott bill, and against the 2025 Greene and 2026 Massie cuts. In January 2024 she signed the Smith–Manning letter, whose signers “thoroughly reject” South Africa’s “charge of genocide” against Israel.
A 1/2, not a clean 1. The voting record is zero-daylight and her campaign plank promises to “unequivocally defend Israel,” with no statement of concern for Palestinian civilians, which rules out a flat 2. There is no leadership on the issue: no authored Israel legislation, no caucus or fundraising role. Her one Israel-adjacent sponsorship is procedural — as a Rules Committee member she sponsored H.Res.1455, the September 2024 resolution that set up House votes on several bills, including H.R.5179 on country-of-origin labels for West Bank and Gaza goods — and is not counted as leadership, though it could be weighed toward 1. Managing the rule’s floor debate, she said she supported “the underlying legislation,” including “H.R. 5179 to end anti-Israel boycotts”.
