Gabe Vasquez
D · U.S. House, NM-2 · Tier 3/4
Tier 3/4, between “Pro-Israel, critical” and “Critical / conditions aid”
An arms-conditioning member whose position runs past the offensive/defensive line he started on. He cosponsors the Block the Bombs Act (which blocks offensive weapons but spares Iron Dome), and signed the April 2024 NM delegation letter that backed ‘the resupply of defensive weapons like David’s Sling and Iron Dome’ while opposing ‘the transfer of offensive weapons that may be used in Gaza.’ In July 2025 he called in his own voice on the administration to “immediately pause all military assistance until a ceasefire is reached” and to sanction Israeli officials who ordered or condoned the killing of civilians; on Jul 15 2026 he voted Aye on the Massie amendment prohibiting any funds in the State-Foreign Operations bill from being used for Israel — the full $3.3 billion Foreign Military Financing line, not a munitions list — and Nay on that bill’s final passage. He still voted for the April 2024 Israel aid supplemental (framed as defensive/humanitarian), affirms Israel’s right to defend itself, and backs a two-state outcome; the pause he asks for is conditioned on a ceasefire rather than a standing embargo, and he uses no genocide language and does not back BDS. He also voted for the 2024 Antisemitism Awareness Act, which writes the IHRA definition of antisemitism into federal law. In August 2025 he signed the Pressley–Pettersen letter urging Secretary Rubio to press Israel to allow a surge of aid into Gaza, above all infant formula, and in September, with most House Democrats, the letter opposing West Bank annexation. In June 2026 Vasquez signed a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, led by Reps. Becca Balint and Joaquin Castro, on Israel’s operations in southern Lebanon, saying Israel’s “targeted, mass destruction of civilian homes and infrastructure does not constitute Israeli self-defense” and asking that, if U.S.-origin arms were confirmed in those operations, the administration “stop arms transfers being used in these operations until these violations cease”; the letter also affirmed that “Israel has a right to defend itself.” Jewish Insider reported on Oct 23, 2026 that Vasquez was among about 30 signers of a draft letter, led by Rep. Ro Khanna and gathering signatures through Nov 6, urging the negotiators of the 2027 defense authorization bill to strip its U.S.-Israel defense-technology cooperation provisions; the draft, which cites Israel’s conduct in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon, says “These are not the actions of a government whose defense establishment should be granted deeper access to American military technology, nor rewarded with U.S. defense contracts,” and asks that any framework kept “carry human rights conditions consistent with those governing other United States security assistance.”
A 3/4. Two acts point toward limiting weapons: he cosponsored Block the Bombs in September 2025, and he voted Aye on the July 2026 Massie amendment, saying New Mexicans’ taxes “should not be spent on a blank check for Netanyahu’s far-right government to unleash senseless violence in Gaza and Lebanon, deny humanitarian aid, and continue the illegal settlements in the West Bank.” In July 2025 he called for the administration to “immediately pause all military assistance until a ceasefire is reached” and to sanction Israeli officials who “ordered or condoned the killing of innocent civilians.” What keeps a foot in 3 is the frame around those acts: Yeas on the IHRA-based Antisemitism Awareness Act, the “river to the sea” resolution and the April 2024 aid package; a Nay on the first Lebanon war-powers resolution in June 2026; the 2024 New Mexico delegation letter backing “the resupply of defensive weapons like David’s Sling and Iron Dome”; a two-state frame; and no genocide language. DMFI’s PAC gave him $3,000 in 2022 and nothing since.
