Gordon Heslop

R · U.S. House, LA-4 · Tier 1/2

Tier 1/2, between “Firmly pro-Israel” and “Mainstream pro-Israel”

Position

Asked in his 2026 iVoterGuide questionnaire whether the U.S. relationship with Israel is important, he answered: “Yes, it is important because they are a democracy in a very troubled part of the world and help us oppose radical Islam.” A retired accounting professor running as “AN ANTI TRUMP REPUBLICAN” against Speaker Mike Johnson, he backs Ukraine, NATO and Greenland’s self-determination, opposes tariffs and Trump’s handling of the Iran war, and would “Ban foreign students from engaging in political activity as a condition of their visa” — a stance he does not tie to Israel or to the campus Gaza protests.

Why this tier

A thin 1/2. His one statement on Israel is his 2026 iVoterGuide answer: asked whether the U.S. relationship with Israel is important, he wrote “Yes, it is important because they are a democracy in a very troubled part of the world and help us oppose radical Islam.” That is unqualified support, with nothing on military aid, weapons, Gaza or Palestinian civilians. On a thin record: that one answer. His long single-page site and his 2026 Ballotpedia surveys (for LA-4 and an earlier Texas run) take up Ukraine, Greenland, NATO and Iran but never Israel, Gaza or Palestine. His anti-Trump, pro-Ukraine internationalism is a general stance that gives no daylight on Israel, and his line on banning foreign students’ political activity names no cause. He holds no office and has led nothing on the issue. Counter-case: unrated, since one sentence calling the relationship important is all there is, with no word on aid, arms or the war.
