Tier 2/3, between “Mainstream pro-Israel” and “Pro-Israel, critical”
The Smoky Mountain News reported after interviewing him in July 2025 that he is “critical of Israel’s conduct in Gaza and concerned that blind allegiance to Israel has become a partisan issue”; he has stated no position on aid or weapons to Israel. A fourth-generation farmer who runs Hickory Nut Gap Farm in Fairview, he won the March 2026 Democratic primary for NC-11 (now open after Rep. Chuck Edwards ended his campaign), running on Hurricane Helene recovery, affordable health care, anti-corruption, small business and farms.
A 2/3, on a thin record: one newspaper’s summary of a single interview, not his own words. After interviewing him in July 2025, The Smoky Mountain News reported that he is “critical of Israel’s conduct in Gaza and concerned that blind allegiance to Israel has become a partisan issue.” Criticism aimed at Israel’s conduct, not just at Netanyahu, is daylight, but the paper reports no position on military aid or weapons, and nothing he has published says more: his platform and the 24 pages in his site map never mention Israel, Gaza or Palestine, and he has not completed Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey. Because the words are the paper’s, they count for less than the same view would in his own voice. Counter-case: a 3, since criticizing how Israel fights is what that tier describes; or unrated, since the summary is from 2025, he has never said it himself, and “blind allegiance” can be read more than one way.
