Tier 1/2, between “Firmly pro-Israel” and “Mainstream pro-Israel”

Position

As Santa Clarita’s mayor he spoke at an October 10, 2023 pro-Israel rally at City Hall, where, in the Santa Clarita Valley Signal’s words, he came “to share his love, support and prayers for the people of Israel,” and in a December 2023 letter wrote: “We stand with Israel, we stand with their neighbors who long for and desire peace, and we pray for a quick end to a war that is bringing pain and tragedy to communities throughout the world.” A Santa Clarita city councilmember (mayor in 2023) and aerospace mechanical engineer challenging Rep. George Whitesides, he runs on safe neighborhoods, affordability, jobs and accountability.

Why this tier

A thin 1/2, on two moments from his 2023 term as Santa Clarita’s mayor. He spoke at an October 10, 2023 rally for Israel at City Hall, there, in the Santa Clarita Valley Signal’s account, “to share his love, support and prayers for the people of Israel.” In a December 2023 Signal letter he wrote: “We stand with Israel, we stand with their neighbors who long for and desire peace, and we pray for a quick end to a war that is bringing pain and tragedy to communities throughout the world.” That is unqualified support for Israel beside a general prayer for peace, with no word on Gaza’s civilians, Palestinians, aid or weapons. As a candidate he has said nothing on Israel: his campaign site and Ballotpedia page never mention it, and he left iVoterGuide’s Israel question unanswered. Counter-case: 2, reading the same sentence’s stand with Israel’s neighbors and its prayer for an end to the war as concern for both sides; or unrated, since these are a mayor’s words from 2023.
