D · U.S. House, MI-11 · Tier 1

Tier 1, “Firmly pro-Israel”

Position

Michigan Senate president pro tem and the MI-11 Democratic nominee. As a state representative he cosponsored Michigan’s 2016 anti-BDS contracting law (HB 5821) and voted for it and its companion bill (HB 5822), and in October 2023 he was lead sponsor of the Senate resolution (SR 78) condemning Hamas that affirmed Israel’s right to defend itself while urging “immediate access to refuge for innocent civilians in Gaza”. Asked in May 2025 about conditioning or cutting aid, he said “it is not the time to abandon that relationship”; his June 2026 questionnaire answer calls to “expand access and deliver the humanitarian aid in Gaza” while insisting the U.S. “must support Israel’s long-term security”.

Why this tier

A 1. In October 2023 he was the first-named of the four senators who offered the Michigan Senate’s resolution (SR 78) condemning Hamas and affirming Israel’s right to defend itself, and as a state representative he cosponsored and voted for Michigan’s 2016 anti-BDS contracting law. He has kept that line since: in a 2024 floor speech he said “‘Zionist’ is now being weaponized as a slur”; asked in May 2025 about conditioning or cutting aid, he told Jewish Insider “it is not the time to abandon that relationship”; and in 2026, JTA reported, he said he would refuse to vote for his party’s University of Michigan regent nominee, a lawyer for campus encampments, calling the nomination “unacceptable.” He has voiced concern for Gaza’s civilians, but always beside support for Israel’s security: SR 78 urged “immediate access to refuge for innocent civilians in Gaza,” and his 2026 questionnaire pairs humanitarian aid with “Israel’s long-term security.” None of it conditions aid or faults Israel’s conduct. Counter-case: a 1/2, since SR 78 is a mild solidarity resolution that itself urged refuge for Gaza’s civilians.
