Jerry Carl
R · U.S. House, AL-1 · Tier 1/2
Tier 1/2, between “Firmly pro-Israel” and “Mainstream pro-Israel”
Former Rep. (AL-1, 2021–2025) who sat on the Appropriations subcommittee for State and foreign operations in 2023–24, now the Trump-endorsed nominee for his old seat. He voted for every tracked Israel measure of his term — the 2021 Iron Dome supplemental, both Israel-only supplementals, the April 2024 package, the May 2024 bill forcing delivery of the paused bombs, ICC sanctions, the amendment barring the State Department from citing Gaza Health Ministry casualty figures and the IHRA-based Antisemitism Awareness Act — and wrote in October 2023 that “Israel has every right to finish this war.” In 2024 he wrote that he has always stood with Israel “because they are God’s Chosen People” and called Code Pink protesters who confronted him over AIPAC money “terrorist sympathizers.” In January 2024 he signed the Smith–Manning letter, whose signers “thoroughly reject” South Africa’s “charge of genocide” against Israel.
A 1/2, not a clean 1. Every Israel vote he cast sits at the pro-Israel end, and his own words during the genocide — Israel’s right “to finish this war,” a war of “good versus evil,” a “Biblical and moral obligation” to support Israel — carry no word for Palestinian civilians, so a flat 2 does not fit. What keeps him short of a clean 1 is the lack of leadership on the issue: none of his 17 sponsored House measures concerns Israel, and calling protesters “terrorist sympathizers” is rhetoric, not the authored bills or official investigations that a crackdown on Palestine-solidarity activism requires. Counter-case: a clean 1 if that rhetoric and his Christian-Zionist framing are read as a hardline brand.
