John Moolenaar
R · U.S. House, MI-2 · Tier 1
Tier 1, “Firmly pro-Israel”
Led an October 2023 letter from more than 30 House members pressing Attorney General Garland on what the Justice Department was doing “to investigate Hamas supporters in the United States”, describing post–October 7 demonstrations as “public rallies being held in support of a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization.” He went on to lead Michigan Republicans in asking the Justice Department to investigate Dearborn’s Al-Quds Day rally (April 2024) and the People’s Conference for Palestine in Detroit (August 2025), and Secretary Rubio to deny a visa to one of the conference’s featured speakers. He called Vice President Harris's absence from Netanyahu's July 2024 address to Congress “a disgraceful decision” and urged Americans to join him “standing with Israel in its fight against Hamas and the dangerous leaders of Iran”, and greeted Israel's killing of Yahya Sinwar with “The world is safer today” (Oct 2024). He has voted the pro-Israel side of every tracked measure — the 2023–24 Israel supplementals, H.Res.894, the Antisemitism Awareness Act, the May 2024 bill to force the paused bomb shipment (H.R.8369), both ICC-sanctions bills, the Gaza casualty-figures amendment and the September 2026 anti-boycott bill — and against the 2025 Greene and July 2026 Massie cuts. In January 2024 he signed the Smith–Manning letter, whose signers “thoroughly reject” South Africa’s “charge of genocide” against Israel.
A 1. Moolenaar has led three pushes for federal action against Palestine-solidarity activity. In October 2023 he led more than 30 members asking the Justice Department what it was doing “to investigate Hamas supporters in the United States,” casting post–October 7 demonstrations as rallies for a terrorist organization. In April 2024 he led four other Michigan Republicans asking Attorney General Garland to investigate Dearborn’s Al-Quds Day rally, whose chants they called “calls for inciting violence” that “are not protected speech.” In August 2025 he led the state’s Republican delegation in asking Secretary Rubio to deny a visa to a featured speaker at the People’s Conference for Palestine in Detroit and the Justice Department to investigate the conference’s “connections to federally designated terrorist organizations.” His votes are zero-daylight, his statements are framed entirely around Israel’s war against Hamas, and he has voiced no concern for Palestinian civilians. Counter-case: a 1/2, since all three are letters, two of them from home-state colleagues reacting to local events; none of his 112 sponsored measures concerns Israel, and his committee leadership is on China.
