Maria Elvira Salazar

R · U.S. House, FL-27 · Tier 1

Tier 1, “Firmly pro-Israel”

Position

FL-27 incumbent, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere. Leads pro-Israel resolutions (H.Res.1117 reaffirming support and opposing one-sided ceasefire pressure; the Israeli-Embassy-bombing anniversary resolution) and communal/antisemitism legislation (wrote the Forgotten Heroes of the Holocaust Gold Medal Act; co-introduced the Commission to Study Acts of Antisemitism in the United States Act; cosponsors the Jewish American Security Act and anti-BDS bills); voted the 2024 aid supplemental. Her own signature legislation, though, is immigration — she wrote the Dignity Act — and the Western Hemisphere, not Israel. In January 2024 she signed the Smith–Manning letter, whose signers “thoroughly reject” South Africa’s “charge of genocide” against Israel.

Why this tier

A clean 1 on authored legislation. In April 2024 she wrote H.Res.1117, which “opposes efforts to place one-sided pressure on Israel with respect to Gaza, including calls for an immediate cease-fire,” naming President Biden’s statement and UN Security Council Resolution 2728; Speaker Johnson said House Republicans “commend Rep. Salazar’s leadership on this issue.” She was also the sponsor of the 2022 resolution on the 1992 bombing of Israel’s embassy in Buenos Aires (H.Res.988), introduced with more than 100 members, joined Chris Smith in introducing the Stop Support for UNRWA Act of 2026, and has voted for every tracked Israel measure she was present for; the nearest she has come to concern for Palestinian civilians is a May 2024 caucus statement she joined, condemning Colombia’s break with Israel, that spoke of “Israeli and Palestinian victims of Hamas.” Her signature legislation is immigration (the Dignity Act), but on Israel she writes the measures rather than only voting for them. Counter-case: a 1/2, since both resolutions are non-binding and neither came to a vote.
