Tier 3, “Pro-Israel, critical”
At a late-September 2026 campaign event with Troy Jackson (C-SPAN clip posted September 27), asked by a voter whether Israel is committing genocide and whether he would vote against any aid to Israel, he called Gaza “the moral issue of our time” and said “certainly cutting off arms shipments at the very least is a place I’d be very willing to go,” adding, “the whole thing, whatever you want to call it, it’s got to stop,” and that “instead of just continually shipping arms and continuing to make it worse, I think we really need to intervene as a Congress and try to stop this.” The Democratic nominee for the open ME-2, facing Paul LePage, he runs on Medicare for All, costs and tariffs, and on “ending the foreign wars” and the Iran war; launching his campaign in October 2025, he told Semafor “People are very impatient to see an end to that war,” and Salon reported that he would support a moratorium on weapons sales to Israel; a June 2026 letter to the Portland Press Herald says he “openly criticized” Rep. Jared Golden's support for sending offensive military aid to Israel. In a Maine Public “Your Vote” conversation that premiered October 22, 2026, asked whether the U.S. should keep supplying offensive weapons to Israel, he said “if we paused or stopped shipping offensive weapons to Israel and bring people to the peace table, that would be a very productive thing to do. We need to stop the killing in Gaza and work on a two-state solution and bring peace to the Middle East”; asked whether Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, he said “I don’t agree with the genocide equation,” citing his work on Maine’s Wabanaki child-welfare truth and reconciliation commission, and “I simply do not see that happening there.”
A thin 3, on three statements across a year. His newest words, on Maine Public in October 2026, stop at offensive weapons: “if we paused or stopped shipping offensive weapons to Israel and bring people to the peace table, that would be a very productive thing to do,” inside a two-state frame; asked directly whether Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, he rejected it: “I simply do not see that happening there.” At a late-September 2026 campaign event with Troy Jackson (a C-SPAN clip posted September 27), asked whether Israel is committing genocide and whether he would vote against any aid to Israel, he called Gaza “the moral issue of our time” and said “certainly cutting off arms shipments at the very least is a place I’d be very willing to go,” adding, “the whole thing, whatever you want to call it, it’s got to stop”: a willingness worded as an opening rather than a pledge. When he launched his campaign in October 2025, Salon reported that he “would support a moratorium on weapons sales to Israel” — the outlet’s words, not a quote from him. His campaign otherwise runs on ending “the foreign wars” and the Iran war. Counter-case: 3/4, on September’s broader willingness to cut off arms shipments, since the October words are days old.
