Oliver Gilbert
D · U.S. House, FL-24 · Tier 1
Tier 1, “Firmly pro-Israel”
As a Miami-Dade County Commissioner he voted with a unanimous commission on September 1, 2026 to raise the share of the county's roughly $9 billion portfolio that may be invested in Israeli government bonds from 3% to 5%, and when residents protested the vote as funding the genocide in Gaza he defended it against descriptions of the vote as giving money to Israel: “Our board today didn’t vote to give any money to anyone,” he said; “We set investment criteria.” As commission chair he was prime sponsor of the October 1, 2024 resolution reaffirming the board’s support “for the protection of the State of Israel” (R-898-24). No campaign statement naming Israel, Gaza or Palestinian civilians found; his campaign’s issues page faults Washington Republicans for spending “your money on a war you didn’t ask for, didn’t vote for, and don’t need” and says “we send billions of dollars to other countries so they can afford universal healthcare,” naming neither the war nor the countries.
A 1, on a thin record. Gilbert’s lead on Israel is a county resolution: as commission chair he was prime sponsor of the October 1, 2024 resolution by which the Miami-Dade board “expresses and reaffirms its support to the people of Israel” and “for the protection of the State of Israel” (R-898-24). He also co-sponsored the October 17, 2023 resolution “supporting Israel and condemning the unprovoked and unjustified war launched by Hamas terrorists against Israel” (R-935-23). Neither mentions Palestinian civilians. In September 2026 he voted with a unanimous commission to widen county investment in Israel bonds during the genocide, an item another commissioner sponsored, and defended it against residents who asked the county to divest: “We set investment criteria.” He has expressed no concern for Palestinian civilians. Counter-case: a 1/2, since a commemorative county resolution orders nothing, the 2023 resolution listed ten commissioners as sponsors, and he has stated no federal position on aid to Israel or arms.
