Paul Gosar

R · U.S. House, AZ-9 · Tier 1

Tier 1, “Firmly pro-Israel”

Position

In his official newsletter Gosar wrote that “The brutality of Hamas has earned it whatever Israel dishes out” and told readers not to listen to “the apologists for genocide who want Israel to use ‘proportionate’ force” (Oct 2023), likened Gaza's civilian dead to Japan's in World War II — “The cause and the fault rest squarely with the Japanese. The same is true here with Hamas” (Oct 2023) — wrote “Do not be misled that there is a country called Gaza or a nation called Palestine” (Jan 2024), and in February 2025 defended Trump's plan to take over Gaza and “find a lasting home for the Palestinian people.” He voted for the November 2023 Israel-only supplemental, the Tlaib censure, H.Res.894, the bill forcing delivery of the paused bomb shipment, ICC sanctions (Jun 2024) and the September 2026 college anti-boycott bill, and against the 2025 Greene and 2026 Massie cuts. He voted against the February 2024 Israel-only supplemental (no stated reason found), against the April 2024 package because “$9 billion goes to ‘humanitarian needs’ in Gaza. Guess who controls Gaza? Hamas,” and against the Antisemitism Awareness Act on First Amendment grounds, adding “I’m not about to second guess how Israel does it” (May 2024). He was one of two Republicans to oppose the June 2024 amendment barring the State Department from citing Gaza Health Ministry casualty figures, and his House site calls BDS “a movement dripping with antisemitic sentiment.”

Why this tier

A clean 1, on a hardline brand built in his own newsletter. In October 2023 he wrote that Hamas “has earned it whatever Israel dishes out,” called Gaza’s people “civilians who elected Hamas” and likened their dead to Japan’s in World War II; in January 2024 he wrote “Do not be misled that there is a country called Gaza or a nation called Palestine”; and in February 2025 he defended Trump’s plan to take over Gaza and “find a lasting home for the Palestinian people.” None of his departures is daylight: he opposed the April 2024 package over its Gaza humanitarian aid, opposed the Antisemitism Awareness Act on First Amendment grounds while saying “I’m not about to second guess how Israel does it,” and gave no reason for his February 2024 Nay or his vote against barring Gaza Health Ministry casualty figures. In 2014 he introduced a defense-bill amendment “to fully support Israel’s lawful exercise of self-defense.” Counter-case: a 1/2 if the newsletter is read as commentary rather than a brand; he has written no Israel legislation since 2014.
