Robert Jackson
D · New York State Senate, District 31 · Tier 3/4
Tier 3/4, between “Pro-Israel, critical” and “Critical / conditions aid”
First Muslim NY state senator; co-sponsor of the Senate "Not on Our Dime" Act (S606) and, in the same session, of the Senate HOPE Act (S7034-A), which would require state agencies to take the IHRA definition of antisemitism into consideration in discrimination cases. He joined the Jewish Voice for Peace ceasefire action at Grand Central, saying he stood “alongside my colleagues, New York State Legislators, and NYC Council Members… demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to save lives.” His documented language is a call for “an immediate ceasefire… to save lives”; he has not used the word “genocide” or called for an arms embargo or BDS.
A 3/4. Jackson cosponsors the Senate “Not on Our Dime” Act (S606), which would bar New York nonprofits from unauthorized support of Israeli settlement activity, and on Oct 27, 2023 he joined the Jewish Voice for Peace ceasefire protest at Grand Central, writing that he stood “in solidarity with the Jewish Voice for Peace-NYC… demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to save lives.” Those acts reach past liberal Zionism. But in the same session he cosponsors S7034-A, the Senate HOPE Act, which would require state agencies to take the IHRA definition of antisemitism into consideration in discrimination cases; its sponsor memo lists “Delegitimizing the state of Israel” among the definition’s examples. His own words stop at a ceasefire: no genocide, arms-embargo or BDS statement. Counter-case: a 4, weighing Not on Our Dime and his early protest over a cosponsorship on a bill still in committee.
