Sandra Van Scotter

D · U.S. House, CA-20 · Tier 3

Tier 3, “Pro-Israel, critical”

Position

A respiratory therapist who now works with developmentally disabled adults, challenging Rep. Vince Fong, she runs on Medicare for All, town-hall accessibility, and agriculture, water and housing for the Valley. Asked in iVoterGuide’s 2026 general-election questionnaire whether the U.S. relationship with Israel is important, Van Scotter answered: “Yes — strategically, historically, and as a democratic ally in a volatile region. However, the U.S. has a documented blind spot regarding Israel's human rights record in Gaza and the occupied territories. Unconditional support has enabled actions — including the attack on Iran — that the U.S. would not tolerate from other allies. True partnership requires honest accountability. Blind loyalty is not an alliance; it is an enabler.”

Why this tier

A 3, on a thin record: one questionnaire answer, beside a May 2026 interview remark that the United States had made clear it is in the Iran war “because Israel asked them to.” Asked by iVoterGuide in 2026 whether the U.S. relationship with Israel is important, Van Scotter called Israel “a democratic ally in a volatile region” but said the U.S. “has a documented blind spot regarding Israel's human rights record in Gaza and the occupied territories,” that “Unconditional support has enabled actions — including the attack on Iran,” and that “Blind loyalty is not an alliance; it is an enabler.” That is criticism and a call for accountability inside the ally frame, with no step on aid or weapons. Her Ballotpedia survey and campaign site never mention Israel, Gaza or Palestine. Counter-cases: 3/4, if her objection to “Unconditional support” is read as a call to condition it; 2/3, reading the ally frame as decisive.
