Tier 2/3, between “Mainstream pro-Israel” and “Pro-Israel, critical”

Position

Asked at an August 28, 2026 press conference whether he would vote to continue military aid to Israel, he did not commit either way: “That’s something I would take a look at at the time, should I be elected to Congress in January, see what the lay of the land is at that time. I’m very concerned about the Netanyahu government’s conduct in Israel,” he said, adding that “what we’ve got to do when we get there is put a microscope on the conduct of the foreign policy of the President and hold the Netanyahu regime accountable for its actions”; WMUK reported he was concerned with “loss of life and human suffering” associated with Israeli military action. A Southwest Michigan state senator since 2019 and former state representative (2011–2014), endorsed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Sen. Elissa Slotkin, he runs on costs, health care, clean water and reproductive rights.

Why this tier

A 2/3, on a thin record: one press-conference answer in August 2026. Asked whether he would vote to continue military aid to Israel, he would not commit (“That’s something I would take a look at at the time”), said he is “very concerned about the Netanyahu government’s conduct in Israel,” and said Congress must “hold the Netanyahu regime accountable for its actions.” WMUK reported he was concerned with “loss of life and human suffering” associated with Israeli military action. That is concern for the war’s toll with no ally or right-to-defend line beside it, and he leaves continued military aid an open question, but he names nothing he would condition or withhold. In the Michigan Legislature he sponsored or cosponsored no Israel, antisemitism or Palestine measure; the October 2023 Senate resolution condemning Hamas (SR 78) was adopted by voice vote, without him among its sponsors. Counter-case: a 2, since criticism aimed at Netanyahu’s government is not daylight on Israel’s conduct as such, the humanitarian words come through WMUK’s account, and declining to commit is not a position on aid.
