Tier 3, “Pro-Israel, critical”
In a September 2024 post on his newsletter about a campaign roundtable at the Fargo mosque, where residents described losing family in Gaza and the West Bank, he wrote that “When we supply an ally with weapons, we should expect them to use those weapons in a way that minimizes noncombatant death and suffering” and that “We should expect courage, restraint, and a commitment to the Law of War, even when the enemy shows none of it,” concluding: “We need an immediate ceasefire and the return of all hostages.” In August 2026 his campaign manager wrote on the same newsletter that he takes no AIPAC money (“AIPAC? Absolutely not.”) and quoted him as saying “let’s take care of our own first before we fund Israel.” A retired Marine major and Iraq veteran who lost ND-AL to Julie Fedorchak in 2024, he is the Democratic-NPL nominee again, running on war powers, farm markets and rural health care.
A 3. In his own words he holds an ally armed by the U.S. to minimizing “noncombatant death and suffering” and to the Law of War, calls for an immediate ceasefire, and relays the grief of Fargo residents who lost family in Gaza — supportive but critical, with no pledge to condition or withhold weapons, so not 3/4. The 2026 line on funding Israel is his campaign manager’s account rather than his own statement. Counter-cases: 2/3, since the arms passage states an expectation of an ally rather than a condition and pairs the ceasefire with the hostages; 3/4 if he says in his own words that he would stop funding Israel’s military.
