Tier 2/3, between “Mainstream pro-Israel” and “Pro-Israel, critical”
In a May 2026 Reddit AMA he wrote that Palestinians “are among the most persecuted people in the world” and that “Israel has committed human rights violations,” blaming much of it on Netanyahu’s government, while saying “Israel has a right to security” and backing Palestinian statehood. The mayor of Cape May, he is the Democratic nominee in NJ-2, running on lower costs, housing, coastal resilience, Social Security and Medicare, and campaign-finance reform; his foreign-policy plank calls for “a foreign policy that prioritizes diplomacy and human rights” and full funding of NATO and the UN. In WHYY’s voter guide (September 2026, updated October 1) he called Israel “an important American ally and has the right to exist in peace and security,” said the United States “should remain committed to Israel’s security and to protecting innocent people from terrorism,” and said Palestinian civilians “deserve safety, dignity, humanitarian assistance, and a future of their own.” Asked about foreign aid for a New Jersey Monitor report on Israel and the Iran war (Oct 19, 2026), he agreed, in the outlet’s words, that any country receiving U.S. aid should submit to whatever restrictions America sets: “So I’m not writing anybody a blank check.”
A 2/3, on a thin record: one answer in his own May 2026 Reddit AMA and a September 2026 voter-guide answer. Asked whether Israel meets international human-rights standards, he wrote that Palestinians “are among the most persecuted people in the world,” that being an ally “does not mean being beyond scrutiny,” and: “So, yes, Israel has committed human rights violations,” placing much of the blame on Netanyahu’s government. That is criticism of Israel’s conduct itself, not only humanitarian concern. It sits inside an ally frame: in the same answer he called Israel “an important ally,” said “Israel has a right to security” and backed Palestinian “self-determination, and, yes, statehood,” and in WHYY’s voter guide he said the United States “should remain committed to Israel’s security” while Palestinian civilians “deserve safety, dignity, humanitarian assistance, and a future of their own.” He states no Israel-specific position on weapons or aid — of U.S. aid in general he told the New Jersey Monitor in October 2026, “I’m not writing anybody a blank check” — and his issues page and Ballotpedia survey do not mention Israel. Counter-case: a flat 2, since the criticism comes inside the ally and security lines and touches nothing Israel receives.
